When We Teach , Especially to Children.

What is this?a>Teachings, especially Children. Teachings are not to be taught to be feared.

As we have wrote about children’s emotions and their needs on our teachings in “Teachings on ‘Family” Part 1 and 2, I think it is better that we change the topic as ‘When We Teach, Especially to Children’ rather than putting Part 3, since it goes more on ‘Teachings and Children’ for this page.

Many people and may be most people that i knows view the word “Teachings” as something that is fearful or almost like punishment. But, this is a wrong believe, one of the main thing in teachings is “giving instructions for the understanding of what we are telling in an understandable ways”. As long as we view teachings or teach in a fearful ways, we are seeing the wrong picture of what God meant of the word “teachings”.
Teaching environments must be a freedom environments where the one who is taught had the freedom to ask questions of what they don’t understand specially if it’s personal teachings or a small class room teachings, unless it is a big audience or some other specific things are being process. Biblical teachings are never meant to be feared, or to be afraid of, but for the renewing of the minds, for refreshments and for giving instructions for a better walk, to make things understandable and to teach what is needed to be taught. So, giving teachings is not like controlling people but making it understandable to be applied.
The words ‘Teachings’ and ‘Disciplines’ are again different, disciplines too must not be abusive and must be done out of love with the heart of a parenthood, I believe we don’t have much authority to discipline if we don’t have the love (Look at Heb 12 for Disciplines).

One of the example for teachings: Suppose you want to make a restaurant, but you don’t know how to make the foods that you want to serve, so you went for a training, also bought some books that are needed for that purpose. The teacher is there giving you instructions on how to bake a cake, how to prepare Chinese foods, how to make tea and coffee and so on, he may also give you home-works to do in practical that you may learn more. When you don’t understand, you ask it again, and the teacher tells you again, after some years of training and receiving instructions and doing it practical you came to have your own restaurant with a big sign board written “David’s Sea Foods”. I believe that is what teachings are all about in general. Is it fearful?, Is it dangerous?, No, not fearful or dangerous, it is a blessings.

When Paul wrote in Ephesians 6:4 – “Fathers, do not exasperate (frustrate them or their emotions)your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord”. Which actually means that we are not to make them unnecessarily angry or frustrate them, or shout at them, playing with their emotions for our own fun, hurting their emotions unnecessarily. Any kinds of teachings must not be done out of anger, out of frustrations, out of irritating heart, not out of fed up, not out of hatred or bad emotions and bad feelings, but he told, ‘Instead’, which means opposite to the first sentence. The word “Instead” could mean bringing them up to the opposite of exasperating children by training and instructions of the Lord, which means teaching them in the ways of the Lord, not teaching them legalistic, not religiosity, not our own made up bunch of religious rules and regulations, but ‘The Training and Instructions of the Lord’. To Love God and others, to be generous, to use good words and good actions, to speak the truth and not tell a lie, to love thy neighbors, not to steal, to learn humbleness and servant-hood, to serve others, to consider others better than themselves, to have joy in hard times, to be a comforter to others, to have a clean heart and minds and those instructions of the Lord we find in the Bible and normal living, like brushing teeth and washing face, but not to the point of legalistic, but with the spirit of freedom. Is teachings fearful?, Is teachings dangerous?, No, many times many of us have those views of fearfulness or dangerous views, and that is not what God tend to mean in teachings. Everything we do as a believer of Jesus Christ must come out of Love and done with Faith, it may be either in schools, at homes, in churches, at a normal living or anywhere.

Children will not be perfect and will make mistakes, so we are to have an understandings of their growth, and teach them with all patience and gentleness, they will learn the patience, gentleness and the grace from our own life and the way we show our grace, love, patience, kindness and gentleness, from our joy in every circumstances, and from our peace of mind and hearts. Are we Authoritarian?, Are we Legalistic?, Are we super controlling? they will learn from our life, our family, our environments, our churches, our communities, our cultures, our friends, their schools and so on, from every environments they are in. I’m writing all these things because as a Fathers, Mothers and Parents, we have the authority over their lives to take care of them and teach them, but we don’t have the authority to curse them, to speak bad words about them unnecessarily or to speak bad words to them, to abuse them in their minds, emotions and physicals or other things either by our actions or words, that would be an abusive use of our authority, we sin in that case. They are to be taught with a gentle heart, using gentle words and actions, and with peaceful minds.

In Deut 11:13-21 is also another paragraph where God brought out concerning children and teachings.

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. (Prov 22:6)

Teachings are not to be taught out of anger, out of frustrations, out of hatred or bad motives, or either controlling spirits, but out of love and caring, out of concern, with the heart that they get the meaning and understandings of what we teach them and by our actions, with patience and gentleness, and with love and faith. Everything we do must come out of faith, love, hope and holiness of heart.

‘Exasperate’ can go to the point of emotional pain, mental pain and even to physical pain, but a cheerful heart is a medicine for our souls (minds, will and emotions) and to the body.

Ephesians 6:4 – “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instructions of the Lord”.
